My time as a graduate intern with the Atlantic Academy was extremely beneficial. The staff are very helpful and eager to see students do well and I feel that I have gained reliable experience that will stand to me in my future career.

Mark Larkin

During my exciting Internship with the Academy I had an abundance of opportunities to enhance my CV with practical whole experiences in Event Management, Print Design and Lecturing to name but a few.

I also had the honour to meet and take photographs of the Irish President as well as the Canadian Ambassador.

I would highly recommend the Academy to any graduate as a great environment to work in and an excellent chance to gain valuable skills which in turn will enhance your opportunity for future employment.

Dr. Ray James

Dr Ray James is a visiting professor from Baker University, Kansas, USA who taught at Dundalk Institute of Technology Oct-Dec., 2011. Ray is a Professor of Bands, and his areas of specialism includes music education, low brass, symphonic bands and jazz.

“I find the facilities no less than outstanding! I simply marvel at the resources that are at student’s fingertips: six or seven music and movie editing bays, giant Mac labs, green screens in multiple filming studios, a dance studio, an art studio, a recital hall, great practice facilities and recording studios, one large enough to house a small orchestra. The incredible opportunity by faculty and staff to design new learning environments and what they have done to transform this old cigarette factory into a university facility which houses the School of Informatics, and Creative Arts is absolutely incredible.”

Richard Chrisman

Richard Chrisman is current Director of the Graduate Programs in Music: the Master of Music, the Artist Diploma, and Doctoral of Music Arts in the Mason Gross School of the Arts; and the Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in musicology and in composition/theory for the Graduate School of Rutgers University. He graduated from Yale with a PhD in music theory, and now devotes most of his time toward composition.

“DkIT is a gold mine for anyone interested in studying anything from traditional Irish music to the latest advances in media and art: CD and DVD production, television, radio, and film. If our American students could see the offerings there and the up-to-date facilities, they would be flocking to Dundalk. And the bus to Dublin stops hourly right there on campus.”

During August 2011 two students (Keith Brady and Sean Smyth) who both graduated with B.A. Hons from the Department of Creative Media and Music were awarded the opportunity to partake in an Atlantic Academy Internship Programme in the United States with two different host agencies.

One internship was with the Milwaukee Irish Fest, which is the biggest Irish Traditional Music festival in North America. The second internship was with the Irish Fair in Minnesota.

Throughout their time with the agencies both Keith and Sean were able to use the skills they had learned during their time at DkIT to their full potential and allow them to put them to use in a working environment.

Below are updates sent by Keith and Sean while on the programme;

Milwaukee Irish Fest

Hello!

My name is Keith Brady. I’m 23 yrs old. I’m from Cavan, living in Dundalk. I just finished my Honour’s Degree in Communications in Creative Media and planning on doing a Masters in Music Technology come September. I’m also a DJ and the chairperson of the DJ Society in the Dundalk Institute of Technology (DKIT).

Just a little on how I got to where I am now, Milwaukee, basically I applied for the internship through Atlantic Academy who are there to enhance the educational experience of students in the Department of Music and Creative Media at DkIT. This led me to an interview for one of two positions of intern at a festival in USA and I was lucky enough to land an internship at Milwaukee Irish Festival!

I’ll try & keep it nice and short from here out!

I flew out of Dublin Airport Wednesday morning, had a stopover in Newark and eventually landed in Milwaukee at half 4 local time. My suitcase didn’t show up but it was delivered the yesterday (Thursday) luckily.

I had a wonder down to the local MALL yesterday..

Later on I arrived at the Irish Fest headquarters later that evening for a bit of pizza! I got to meet everyone involved with the festival and got a short tour around the offices. We also went through this year’s schedule of what we will be getting up to over the next two weeks!

Today I hit the Wisconsin State Fair where I took loads of pictures on my phone. I’ve posted some highlights below!

Day 2

Hey guys!

After a great BBQ here at the Fitzgibbons household yesterday, today the Interns (Hazel Lake, Cathy McGarry & myself) got a tour and history lesson of the grounds of the festival from John Mayer who is a veteran when it comes to Irish Fest. The grounds are a permanent grounds for festivals all year round with Summer Fest being the main festival held every year with commercial acts.

Day 3

Sorry for the delay with this post but my schedule at Irish Fest got busy so I didn’t get much time to update but here it is.

Tuesday morning started working in the Retail area and then the Cultural area. This involved learning about each section and mostly moving equipment around.

After lunch the interns were brought on a trip to the Archives with Barry Stapleton at the Irish Fest Center. These archives included much Irish & Irish American music memorabilia along with a massive collection of CDs, tapes, VHS tapes, DVDs and much more.

After our trip to the Archives we were put in the Office & Bank area. Here we learned all about Customer Care, Communications on the grounds, Operations, Financial Information, Grounds Tickets, etc

That evening there was a meeting for all the volunteers at the Tipperary Stage where everyone was brought up to date with all the going ons of the festival. After the meeting all the staff and volunteers were allowed into the Retail Area where they could buy Irish Fest Merchandise before the actual festival.

This concluded the day until the Session later that night.

Irish Fair Minnesota

Hi all,

After 8 hours or 4(ish) episodes of Supernatural, an episode of The Big Bang Theory, an episode of Two and a Half men and some food and sleep thrown into the mix I’ve arrived at Charlotte, North Carolina. In 1 and a half hours, I’ll grab another flight that will take me to St.Paul, Minnesota.

It’s probably best to introduce myself a little. I’m Sean and I’ve just graduated from DkIT with an BA Honours in Creative Multimedia. I’m a gig photographer and a web designer, in my spare time, when I’m not working for the man. I’m hoping that this will become more of a photoblog than anything else because, let’s face it, who wants to read me rattling on? So expect more updates over the coming weeks.

So until next time,
Sean

PS. Free internet in the Airport is pretty neat!

Day 2

This morning I went to the Mall of America which is the biggest Mall in the US. It’s huge. So big, someone thought it was a good idea to stick a few rollercoasters inside

So of course I had myself a go.

Below are a few photos that I took while just walking around for a while today.

Day 3

I’ve been working at the Irish Fair all week where 8.30am to 10pm shifts are going down. Extremely busy and frantic but absolutely amazing fun.

I’m linking to some photos that I’ve taken throughout the few days because I’ve not been able to upload them to Flickr yet (busy, busy!).

Day 4

As you can see, I’ve been hard at work in the office Monday and yesterday and later on today I’ll be out on the site where the fair will be on. I’ve lending a hand in the office helping the other interns where I can and also helping the Director of the Fair when possible. The site has been marked out with paint on the ground and now things have to be placed around the area such as tents, chairs, bins and loads of other stuff.

I’ve been helping with some of their social media and I’ve launched two competitions to help create more followers and people liking the Twitter and Facebook pages respectively. You can

I visited the Fair site on Monday when even the ground hadn’t been marked but it’s a beautiful location. It’s held on Harriet Island which (shock horror!) isn’t actually an island but its a really lovely area. You can see the backdrop of one of the Twin Cities which is just beautiful.

You can click on the link –>View Larger Map and then you can see what will be the main stage by Friday afternoon.

Below is a view from my bedroom window

This years theme for the school will be – Thomas D’Arcy McGee ‘From Young Irelander to Canadian Loyalist’. It will explore Young Ireland and its legacy, McGee’s relationship with John Mitchel, the changing and diverse natures of our cherished ‘isms’ and why so many Young Irelanders served under two flags; Carlingford’s D’Arcy McGee in Canada, Newry’s John Mitchel in the Confederacy, Newry’s John Martin in Westminster, Monaghan’s Sir Charles Gavin Duffy in Victoria and Waterford’s Thomas Francis Meagher with the Union.

The theme will be discussed through various keynote speeches by academics from Canada including Dr David Wilson, Professor of Celtic Studies, University of Toronto and Biographer of Thomas D’Arcy McGee. Also speaking will be Anthony Russell, Retired Senior Lecturer in Education, Anglia Ruskin University.

“From his early involvement in Ireland, to his political leadership in Canada which led to him being called a ‘Father of Confederation’, D’Arcy McGee has created his place in history. This contribution is fittingly recognised in the establishment of the Thomas D’Arcy McGee International Summer School in the home town of his birth”.

His Excellency Loyola Hearn, Canadian Ambassador to Ireland.

“A brilliant writer, outstanding orator and charismatic politician, Thomas D’Arcy McGee was one of the greatest Irishmen of the nineteenth century — a one-time revolutionary republican who wound up as a Father of Canadian Confederation, and whose career is endlessly fascinating”.

Dr David Wilson, Professor of Celtic Studies, University of Toronto and Biographer of Thomas D’Arcy McGee.

“The Thomas D’Arcy McGee International Summer School allows us to focus on the very different geographical and political journeys of the Young Irelanders following the 1848 rebellion – like McGee many served under two flags”.

After the tour we followed Jane Anderson who is the Executive Director of the festival. With Jane, we attended the needs of various employees and volunteers on the grounds.

We grabbed a bit of lunch & were sent to the Cultural Village, which is on the grounds, where we helped finish a light house that we started working on Saturday.
